Sailing the Mediterranean is a luxury and this tour helps those arriving via Civitavecchia visit the most essential sites during their short visit to the Eternal City. Start the morning with a private car and driver waiting as your disembark your cruise ship to take you into central Rome in order to meet your guide. This tour starts under the silhouette of the Colosseum venturing through one of the 76 ancient portals into the interior of the Flavian Amphitheater, where men faced their glory or their demise at the center of 50,000 spectators. Then you will wind your way through the ancient Roman Forum, the apex of all public commerce and bureaucracy with a history as old as the 8th century BCE. As you weave your way through a series of ancient roads, flanked with the remains of crumbling temples, markets and triumphal arches your guide will share with you how the political and social decisions made in these declining spaces once determined an Empire so powerful the entire known world shuttered at its feet. Then you will leave the ancient city behind, departing with your guide to view the second largest collection of artwork in the world, held within the masonry walls of the Vatican Museums. Inside the Vatican you will explore the culture and history of the masters of the Renaissance, their struggles and frustrations along with their triumphs and glories. Starting from a vantage point inside the museums directly across from St. Peter’s Basilica, your guide will describe how humble beginnings have lead to what lie before you. As you make your way through the various chambers of the museum, including the Belvedere Courtyard, the apartments once occupied by the Borgia pope, the Hall of Maps, the Hall of Tapestries, and the Raphael rooms, your guide will detail how the collection came to call these sacred walls home and how the works before you helped defined their genres and pinpointed exact moments when the world succumbed to the greatest crafts ever made. Then you will enter the Sistine Chapel to examine a piece of work many consider to be the most magnificent execution of craft and skill ever created by a single man. As you depart the Sistine Chapel through an exclusive staircase used primarily for the movements of the pope, you will end your time at Vatican City in St. Peter’s Basilica where you will view Michelangelo’s Pieta and Bernini’s Baldacchino built in order to mark the tomb of the martyr Peter. Then you will leave Vatican City behind, so you and your guide can begin to explore the more aesthetically pleasing exterior spaces of the Eternal City. You will conclude your day by winding through the dreamy piazzas of Renaissance and Baroque era Rome. In Piazza Navona you will stand between the facade of Borromini’s Sant’Agnese in Agone and Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers, two structures continuously taunting each other just as their creators had done so in life. Then you will arrive at the foot of Rome’s most illustrious and arguably most alluring buildings, a structure that has seen Rome’s rise and subsequent fall and has survived more than 1,885 turbulent years of history- the Pantheon. At the conclusion of your day in Rome, your private driver will pick you up and take you back your ship in time to depart for your next exciting destination.

Additional Information and Booking:
You will meet your driver as you disembark your ship. He/She will be holding a sign with your name on it. Your driver will take you to a meeting point in order to meet your guide for the day.

Dress Code:
The Vatican enforces a strict dress code upon entering. No shorts above the knee and shoulders must be covered at all times for all men, women and children. Please refrain do not bring large backpacks or handbags, as you will not be able to enter the Vatican Museums with them. Small bags, cameras bags and small water bottles are permitted.
Photography is allowed throughout most areas of this tour. Photography is allowed in the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica but not in the Sistine Chapel. Please refrain from using a flash throughout the entire museum.
